ABOUT THE BOOK

Life isn't always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything.
Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?
Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn't going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.
Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

EXCERPT

“Thinking of going in? Or are you just gonna block the entrance?”
Llew turned at the sound of the sure voice behind him. Since he seemed to tower over everyone he looked down at the pretty brunette with dark brown eyes to match. “Um. Sorry.” Llew mumbled quickly moving out of her way.
“Well don’t be sorry shuga’, just escort a lady inside.” Llew didn’t blink as he watched the lady stalk towards him. Her full chest sat above an extremely narrow waist. It almost looked unnatural. She dressed and wore the amount of makeup that a grown woman would, but her smooth face and approach screamed her real age. She was jailbait if he’d ever seen one. Llew gave her a slight head nod and turned to leave when his elbow was hooked.
“I saw you in the general store applying for a job. You musta’ jus’ got into town, because if not I’d have known, honey. So you got kin here?”
Silence.
The laugh was an all-out immature giggle and it graded on his nerves. “Cat got your tongue, darlin’”. She moved in even closer and dragged a long red nail down Llew’s arm, tilting her head back to look up at him. “You want me to beg, huh? Come on now, handsome. Escort a lady to a movie… then maybe -”
“Maybe when he sees’ a lady… he’ll escort one.”
Llew diverted his attention away from the overzealous minx that was practically humping his leg and focused on the beautiful man approaching with another guy in tow. His voice wasn’t overly deep like his own, it was a smooth and melodic southern drawl. Like he could be a singer or a poet. He walked with an unhurried gait that was a mixture of ‘I’m in charge’ and ‘you’re on my time, not the other way around’, and Llew found it sexy as fuck. His tall friend chuckled behind him, moving away to purchase their tickets. Is he on a date? No, their demeanor definitely said ‘friends.’
“Mind ya’ own business Smith, Jr. I saw him first.”
Smith, Jr.
The man hooked one thumb in his pocket not the slightest bit fazed at the remark. But Llew was thrown. Was this guy actually gay or was she being a smart aleck? The man gave him nothing to go on. He moved closer towards them and Llew got a nice whiff of his spicy, bold cologne when a cool breeze blew his way. It was an interesting contradiction, because the man’s entire persona said ‘cool and composed’.
“Mosey along, Sallie Ann. Don’t make me ring ya’ daddy. He told me keep an eye on you while he’s gone and I agreed. He’d be rather put out if I didn’t follow through on my promise.”
She reluctantly let go of his arm, letting loose a long drawn out huff of annoyance. Llew didn’t bother watching her walk away. She was irrelevant. With his hands tucked deep in his pockets he eyed the man in front of him with a mixture of curiosity and wistfulness.
“Sometimes a person has gotta’ run interference with that girl. She’s usually not that bad but her daddy’s outta’ town, so ya’ know how young girls can be.”
Actually, not really.
“Hi. I’m Shane Smith, Jr.” he stuck out a large, calloused hand and it took Llew a couple seconds to process that he was going to touch him. Llew shook his hand, his mouth still closed tight as he watched the man’s eyes. They were light brown and full of humor and amusement. He immediately thought that this was obviously a guy who had little worries if any in life. Wait a minute…Smith….Jr. Is he the owner of? He let go of the strong grip on his hand and wished he’d been able to hold it a little longer.
“And you are?”
Llew swallowed before answering. “Llew.”
Those eyes twinkled again and dark brown brows rose up in question. “Llew…just Llew.”
It was a humiliation when a man hated to tell someone his name. But by doing so it meant that they would soon know who he really was. Know who he was classified as. He didn’t want this man to know that, god help him he didn’t. But lying wasn’t an option.  Fuck it. “Llewellyn Gardner.”
So many broke eye contact with him and Llew was more than intrigued that Mr. Shane Smith, Jr. was staring at him just as hard as he was staring back. He didn’t know why he was looking at him that way but he didn’t mind it.
“Now that’s a name.” Smith smiled beautifully.
Llew wasn’t sure if this guy was flirting with him or not, he’d been in a place where flirting didn’t exist for so long, he’d forgotten what it looked like…what it sounded like. The way Shane Smith, Jr. was smiling at him it sure seemed like it. Llew could imagine himself with a strong man like this. A man who was gorgeous but didn’t know it. Not overly done up in fancy digs, he was dressed like a working man but he wore that look well. He appeared simple but confident, like a man that followed his own counsel and was not easily persuaded. But Llew wouldn’t dare get his hopes up. As soon as word got out that there was a newly registered sex offender in their quaint little town, Smith, Jr. might be leading the lynch mob to run him out of there.

BOOK BLAST: V. L. Locey's Early to Rise plus #Giveaway! #Gayfiction #Humor

Author Name: V. L. Locey
Book Name: Early to Rise
Release Date: April 1, 2015
Pages or Words: 112 pages
Categories: Erotica, Gay Fiction, Humor, Romance
Publisher: Torquere Press
Cover Artist: Brandon Clay

Blurb(s):

There are few things worse than being left at the altar by the man you thought loved you. Just ask Simon Wilder. He knows all about it. He also knows a thing or two about getting fired. It`s been a rotten week for Simon and making major life decisions during such turmoil may not be the wisest thing Simon has ever done. Or is it?

Packing up his clothes, his collection of Tony Orlando CD`s, and his cat, Sambuca, Simon leaves the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia behind and heads out to live on his uncle Tiberius` farm in the mountains of Pennsylvania. Starting over on the farm where he vacationed once as a child is a going to be just what the doctor ordered, as long as that doctor is the good-looking large animal veterinarian, Gentry Martin. Is a sexy country vet the cure for a love-sick city boy?

Excerpt:

"Welcome to Elderberry Grove. You passing through?" He offered his hand and I shook it. Then I reluctantly released his hand and busied myself with putting my watch back on.

"No, actually I'm going to be moving into--"

A sharp blast on a horn cut me off. Handsome-As-Hell and I both whipped around to find a huge white pig tooting the horn of the old blue Chevy pickup parked beside my Captiva. My mouth literally dropped open.

"Shit. I forgot how she gets when her coffee is late. Nice meeting you!" the man who saved my life grinned. Good thing I had my vehicle behind me or I would have melted like an ice cream cone in August at his flashing white teeth.

Dumbstruck, I watched the man grab a takeout container holding two large cups of coffee off my hood then run to the porker resting her cloven hooves on the steering wheel.

With a grin and a wave, he and his swine friend rattled off down the two-lane in the direction of Elderberry Grove's booming downtown section. I closed my mouth.

"I get the feeling we're not in Port Richmond anymore," I muttered, eyes glued to the departing blue tailgate. Sambuca hissed at me in reply.

Blurb(s):
Captain Zachary Smith had long suspected he was gay. Still, he could ignore that in the face of his career. He was a military man--a lifer. Everything was fine until a certain inscrutable FBI agent trampled all over Zack’s personal Don’t Ask policy.

Previously published by Torquere as part of the Going to the Chapel anthology.

Excerpt:

Captain Zachary Smith bit back a groan when he saw the man seated in front of his colonel’s desk. It was his nemesis, his secret crush. His face serious and otherwise expressionless, he did his best to pretend that he was alone in the room, listening to a recording.

“Rest, Captain,” barked his commander, Colonel Marshall. Zack dropped his salute to clasp his hands behind his back, eyes fixed on an invisible point above the colonel’s head. “Mr. Thayer has need of your services once again,” the senior officer went on. Zack fought the urge to cringe or to look at the third man.

Federal Agent Falk Thayer lounged easily in his chair, seemingly unaffected by the scene playing out in front of him. He’d come in and announced his needs. The ranking officer had listened and offered him provision. Zack had an emotional price to pay, but Falk was apparently unmoved by it.

“Captain,” growled Colonel Marshall, “Federal Agent Thayer will require your cooperation regarding the Pavarato case.” The older man nodded toward a beige folder resting on the corner of his desk. “I expect you to assist fully with his investigation.”

“Yes, sir. Of course, sir,” Zack rapped back, focused entirely on his superior officer.

“That will be all, Captain.” The colonel nodded sharply. “You are excused. Make yourself available to Agent Thayer,” he ordered.

“Yes, sir,” Zack affirmed, turning sharply. Without even a quick look toward Falk Thayer, he left the room.

***

“Coffee, Penelope, would you please?” Zack asked as he passed his secretary’s desk.

Though she was an Army sergeant, Penelope Raines preferred not to stand on ceremony.

They’d been instant friends since their first meeting, and he didn’t doubt that she knew most of his secrets. He'd told her half of them, and she’d likely guessed the rest. When others were present, they maintained a formal relationship; otherwise, they were relaxed with each other.
“Coming up, Z.” She aimed a commiserating smile his way, turning toward the break room.
He strode into his small office and kicked the door closed behind him. Groaning, he collapsed into his office chair, his face sinking into his crossed arms resting upon his desk.

Moments later, when the door creaked open, he didn’t look up. The scent of strong coffee tickled his nose telling him that Penelope hadn’t let him down.

“Just put it on the desk, Pen,” he said into his forearm. “Hey, d’me a f’vr?” he mumbled, lifting his head a fraction of an inch, “Gimme the Pavarato file ‘n lemme know when Ag'nt Thayer heads this way.” He dropped his head back into the crook of his arm, wondering when his luck would improve.

He heard the sound of the cup landing on his desk, but Penelope didn’t leave. He didn’t stir for a moment until, after several long seconds, still without looking up, he mumbled, “Pen? You need something else?”

“I was coming in anyway, Smith,” Agent Thayer’s smooth tenor answered, amusement thick in his voice.

Zack shot to his feet, nearly knocking over his chair. Automatically, he snapped to attention, groaning inside when he realized he’d done it. He heard the other man’s chuckle and reached for his coffee, nonchalantly taking it from the corner of his desk, hoping to hide his embarrassment.

“Now, what kind of a good soldier gets caught unaware like this?” Falk mused, causing a hot blush to sweep up and burn Zack’s cheeks.

“I, I, um, you…” he stammered, feeling like a fool. Sucking in a deep breath, he stood up straight. He was six feet and two inches tall, muscular and attractive, and he knew how to use it to his best advantage. Why wouldn’t it work on Agent Falk Thayer? “I wasn’t expecting you to just walk in,” he objected, carefully sipped at the strong brew.

“I didn’t ‘just walk in,’” the other man told him calmly. “I stopped at your secretary’s desk. She had your coffee.” He nodded toward the liquid crutch cupped in Zack’s hands.

Zack couldn’t understand it. Falk Thayer had medium brown hair, medium brown eyes, and regular features. The other man was easily four inches shorter than he was. How he could be so unremarkable and so intimidating at the same time, Zack just didn’t know. But he was.

“Um, yeah,” Zack looked away and took another deliberate sip of coffee. “Well, what is it you want me to do?” he asked grudgingly.

About the author:

These things—author biographies—always give me trouble. Should I say I’m a single female over forty? Or would you rather know that I began writing professionally a bit over a decade ago? It’s safe to say I’m a dreamer. I love learning about people and exploring emotions. Every story is a journey, sometimes a wild ride, other times cray trip. Can you tell that I love to travel? I share my home with two cats and two birds. One of the cats is an aggressive young lady who moved in downstairs. My middle-aged guy isn’t sure if he wants to run from her or to her. I’ll let you know if a romance develops there. The birds are taking bets.

INTERVIEW: Alexis Duran plus #Giveaway!

Hello Alexis and welcome to The Hat Party! <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

You’ve been given the opportunity to go back in time and give your 13-year-old self a message. What do you say?

Never stop writing. People will try to convince you that you don't know enough to write a novel at the age of thirteen- finish your silly spy novel, put it aside, and start another one. Keep doing that until you sell one. In college, your little girl dreams of being super special will be crushed. Do not stop writing!  In your twenties men and booze will be a serious distraction. Do not stop writing!

So, you were editing along and zombies attack. And they are on fire! What do you do?

Am I on a deadline? Normally, if faced with the choice between editing and engaging with the flaming undead, I'd pick up the ax, the shotgun and run outside with nary a thought. But if my editor is waiting on me, I'm afraid I'd have to retreat to the bunker until it starts to rain, which in Oregon should take about five minutes (ten in the summer).

Describe yourself using song lyrics.

This was stolen (and brazenly rewritten) from Cake's Short Skirt/ Long Jacket:

I'm a girl who gets up early
I'm a girl who writes a lot
I've got uninterrupted productivity
I use a machete to cut through plot.
My ballpoint pen shines like justice
My conflict is dark like tinted glass
I'm fast and I'm thorough
And sharp as a tack
I'm writing down stories
And making up crap.

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!)

Here's an excerpt from the beginning of Blood of Salar:

“Sexual pleasure is a gift from the gods, and we should thank them,” M’lan said. The first rays of the rising sun hit his face, and he welcomed Salar with a smile.
“I agree,” Jamil said, approaching and casting his shadow over M’lan. He stood nearly a hand taller and lowered his face for a kiss. M’lan hungrily sought Jamil’s lips, but after a brief, almost violent assault with teeth and tongue, Jamil continued downward, licking and biting M’lan’s neck.
He ended by kissing the hollow above M’lan’s collarbone while once again seizing M’lan’s waist. M’lan grunted in surprise when Jamil pushed him back against the rough bark of a zinn tree. He’d lost all spatial awareness in the swift onslaught. Jamil acted like a man starving, and M’lan wondered if the handsome noble had actually been faithful. M’lan certainly had been and welcomed whatever Jamil might demand of him.
To M’lan’s delight, Jamil dropped to his knees before him. M’lan stifled a groan. He closed his eyes, and the sun played off his eyelids, the lingering images of Jamil undressing backlit by molten sunlight.
Jamil caressed M’lan’s throbbing cock and murmured, “I thank Salar for the perfection of your body.”

What makes you inexplicably happy?

Dressing up like a fairy and being around other adults who are also dressed like fairies. Being around other writers who are excited and energized about their work.  Dogs in hats.

What is your biggest, most-wild writing dream? (Nothing is too outlandish!)

I have this really crazy dream of actually making a living writing. Wacky, I know!  I see myself traveling the globe, camping out in any quaint little hotel that catches my fancy, and writing novels set in those locales.  I'd also like to be invited back to speak at my university, so I can tell them what shits the writing professors were and give all the struggling young writers the same advice I gave my 13-year old self-  Don't let the jerks get you down!

What is your favorite literary quote?

This might not be literary, but I've always applied it to my personal struggle to write.  "What you can do or think you can do, begin it.  For boldness has Magic, Power and Genius in it." Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

What one food item do you consider to be your arch nemesis?

Donuts. They look benign. Hell, they look like sugary, friendly life preservers, but they are actually out to get me, especially in the morning. They conspire with coffee to trick me into overdosing on caffeine and sugar so I'll act like a twitchy gremlin the rest of the day.

Biggest mistake you’ve made in your writing career and what you’ve learned from it.

A small independent press published my first novel. For an extra 5% share of the royalties, they gave me the option to do my own proofreading.  BIG mistake. Apparently my eye isn't aware of the difference between "taut" and "taught", along with a lot of other annoying homophones. Always use a professional, even if you have to pay them yourself.

And finally, for THE most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kinds of dachshunds?

The long kind.  All the better for sending down holes after donuts.

Blurb(s):

M'lan, headmaster of the order of Ka'alar and Jamil Jarka, king's assassin, find their impossible love challenged to the utmost as a rebellion sweeps them apart, sending Jamil on a dangerous mission to assassinate the rebel leader, General Charvat.  Unknown to anyone, Charvat is on his way to the temple to exploit the headmaster's magical abilities.

When the rebel army arrives, M'lan is thrust into a struggle against political and sexual dominance as Charvat attempts to break his resistance. Violence and death mount, awakening within M'lan both the powers of destruction and the desire for revenge.

On the trail of his prey, Jamil begins to question his devotion to M'lan as his once innocent lover transforms into a mage and invades the assassin's thoughts and dreams.  The closer Jamil draws to M'lan, the more he puts his life and his very soul at risk.  Jamil soon realizes that his lover might prove to be more deadly than the man he was sent to kill.

A final confrontation between assassin and monk might destroy them both, but Jamil is relentless in his determination to rescue M'lan, for he knows that only his love can master the mage.

Excerpt:

M'lan knelt beside the assassin's bronzed body. He placed his palm on Jamil's chest and silently beseeched Salar to remove the deadly impulses instilled in Jamil ever since he began his training as an assassin. Jamil closed his eyes and seemed to relax, but as the warm energy of the god seeped through M'lan's fingers, Jamil jerked suddenly to full alertness. Like a cobra striking he seized M'lan's wrist and gave it a painful twist, eyes flashing. M'lan sat back, startled.

Jamil did not let him go. He let out a slow breath and lifted M'lan's fingers to his mouth. He kissed the knuckles of a clenched fist. "The last thing I need is more spells to confuse this simple warrior's mind."

"A prayer is not a spell!" M'lan tried to pull free but couldn't. He gritted his teeth, fighting back a rising anger. Jamil's strength both entranced and infuriated him.

"Stop trying to weaken me." Jamil said in a wretchedly calm voice. "You must stay here and do your duty, I must go away and do mine. Nothing has changed."

M'lan inhaled slowly, breath catching. "Let me go."

BONUS QUESTIONS:
*What inspired you to write Blood of Salar?

The first book in the Masters and Mages series, Touch of Salar, was inspired by a fantasy I had about being treated by a masseuse ( a really hot masseuse, of course) with magical healing powers.  Blood of Salar had to be written because I love the characters in Touch and I had to know how their relationship evolved. I knew there was trouble brewing, and I was right.

*Is there anything special you’d like us to know about your book?

I have a crush on my characters. Is that TMI?  Touch of Salar was the culmination of many years of getting to know these guys so well that I was finally brave enough and motivated enough to enter the realm of m/m erotica.  Blood of Salar is quite a bit longer than Touch, with a deeper breadth and scope of story.  I think this is true because Touch was written in a burst of excitement and adrenalin.  With Blood, I allowed more time for the story to develop.

*What are your hopes for this title?

Besides that everyone loves it and buys several copies for all of their friends?  I really do hope people connect with it and get into the whole series. I'm working on book three right now, and I'd love to see the three books published together as a collection, in print!
