INTERVIEW: Rachel Sparks plus #Giveaway! #MMRomance

Today we're talking with Rachel Sparks, a lovely woman who is bringing you a special story she's written. Rachel has unfortunate first-hand knowledge of her subject matter, but the message is powerful and needs to be told.

Make sure also to check out the full interview for your chance to win a copy of her new book.

Hello Rachel and welcome back to The Hat Party! <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview again! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

Tell us about a time you were done a great kindness.

When I decided to write books that burn in my soul, which are M/M, the Queen Of Sweetness Raine helped me out so much. She helped me get blog tours and introduced me to her friends and help promote me.

You’ve been given the opportunity to go back in time and give your 13-year-old self a message. What do you say?

1) Don’t give up on your dream to be writer. You will be a published author one day. 2} Write books that burn in your soul, not books your relatives tell you to write. 3} Go to the football game in September 1989 not cruising!!

Describe yourself using a literary quote.

“I am and always will be optimist, the hoper of far flung hopes, and the dreamer of improbable dreams.” 11th Doctor

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!)

Two men spotting each other across the room. A knowing look. Meeting in front of a painting. The bumping of shoulders. The smiles. The exchange of numbers. The first date. The butterflies in the stomach. The touching of hands. The laughter. The walk on the beach. The intertwining of fingers. The smell of the ocean. The feel of sand under the feet. The hand caressing the cheek. The anticipation of the first kiss. The beating of hearts. The soft kiss that turns into a passionate kiss. The love flowing between the two men. The many dates and many kisses. Getting to know each other more. The candle lit dinner. Getting down on one knee. Saying yes. Getting ready to get married. Being able to get married. Becoming one. That to me says love.

What makes you inexplicably happy?

Besides my family happy and well off…John Barrowman

Sing us a song!

This is the moment! This is the day
When I send all my doubts and demons on their way!
Every endeavor I have made, ever Is coming into play
Is here and now, today!

This is the moment
This is the time
When the momentum and the moment
Are in rhyme!

Give me this moment, this precious chance
I'll gather up my past and make some sense at last

This is the moment when all I've done
No more my dreaming, scheming and screaming
Become one!
This is the day, see it sparkle and shine
When all I've lived for becomes mine!

For all these years, I've faced the world alone
And now the time has come to prove to them I've made it on my own
This is the moment, my final test
Destiny beckoned, I never reckoned second best
I won't look down, I must not fall!
This is the moment, the sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment!
Damn all the odds!
This day, or never,
I'll sit forever
With the gods!

When I look back,
I will always recall
Moment for moment
This was the moment
The greatest moment
Of them all!

What one food item do you consider to be your arch nemesis?

Salad because I love salads but because of my food allergies I can’t eat it.

Biggest mistake you’ve made in your writing career and what you’ve learned from it.

Writing books that my relatives told me I had to write. I learn to always follow your heart.

You’ve just inherited a dachshund farm! Now what?

I would call Raine and give her the farm!

The perfect life was just a lie…

John Burrows had a wonderful husband who loved him. The job of his dreams. He had a loving family, loyal friends, and adoring fans. His life was everything a man could hope for until it fell apart. Society says it does not happen, that it is all a lie, so John hid the truth from everyone until it was almost too late.

The truth was revealed…
Ben Tensley thought that meeting your soulmate on the most traumatic night of his life was hard. He discovered that watching the man you love try and heal in the middle of chaos was even harder. Ben and John struggle to find solid ground… until John’s nightmare returns.

Will John be strong enough to give love a chance?

Ben placed his hand lightly on John’s check. He stared deeply into John’s eyes. Ben could see the pain no matter how hard John tried to hide it. “Are you going to let me in John?”
John swallowed and licked his lips.
Ben leaned in closer and closer to John. He was so close that John could feel the hot breath against his lips. He closed his eyes as he felt Ben press his mouth firmly, offering no resistance. He let Ben explore the depths of his mouth with his tongue. Ben knew this was more than just a connection. This was what he had been yearning for all these years. John was exactly what he needed.
John put his hands on Ben’s chest and pushed him away. He could feel his heart pounding and hear it in his ears. “Wait… stop… please.”
Ben raised his hands and moved back. “I’m sorry, I thought you…”
John got up and walked over and placed his hands on a nearby table with his head down. He was trying to calm down. He felt fear gripping him.
Ben got up and walked over to the table. “Hey…”
John stood up. “Could you just back up please? I need some breathing room.”
Ben raised his hands and backed up. “I’m sorry.” Ben could have kicked himself. He had taken it too far and he knew it. At this rate he would never have a chance for a relationship with John.
John picked up a bottle of wine and poured himself a glass. He drained the entire glass in a matter of minutes.
                “You want me to leave?”
John ignored Ben and filled his glass again, draining it quickly before slamming it on the table. “Hell no! I just need some space dammit!”
Ben walked around the table and took the wine bottle. “Look, I’m not going to stand here watch you drink an entire bottle of wine and cuss me out.”
John tried to reach for his wine bottle. “Then leave!”
Ben wouldn’t let him have the wine bottle. “I am not going to let you start drinking when you feel nervous around me. I’m not going to rape you. You wanted me to stop, and I did.”
John was curling his hands into fists.

What inspired you to write the story you’re promoting? When I was 19 until age 22 I was in an abusive marriage. I wanted to tell my story because writing is therapeutic. So I wrote this M/M story.

Is there anything special you’d like us to know about your book? That not to judge the person that is in an abusive relationship. Many times the abuser will in the beginning be loving. You fall in love but it changes once you are in that relationship. The abuser gets into your mind. What you normally will not do, you will do in that relationship.

What are your hopes for this title?

To help people realize what it is like to be in that relationship. What the person goes through after leaving that person and trying to start over. To help someone that been through it to realize that there is a good person out there for them.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Rachel Sparks has been a published author for 11 years. Until recently she wrote what people wanted her to. Last year was a turning point for her. She decided to write what was in her heart and what she believed in. She published her first M/M. The year marked the release of her second M/M. She now writes from her heart and soul. She tells beginning authors to always stretch their wings as a writer and to never be boxed. Rachel has a degree in Early Childhood Education and on in Social Work.

  2. Congratulations on your new book! The excerpt was very moving. If you are able to get people to understand not to judge the person in the abusive relationship, it will be awesome.

  3. I got the chance to review her book To Be Whole when it was released and I really enjoyed it. So of course I'd love to read this book as well. Thanks for the chance!

  4. congrats on the new release

  5. Congratulations on the new release! Love, love, love the excerpt! Looking forward to reading it.

  6. Congratulations on the new book. This book sounds really good. I do think it's needed because society doesn't realize that abusive relationships can happen between MF, MM or FF. For some reason society as a whole has a tendency to victimize the victim. What did they do to make it happen? Why did they stay? etc. Hope the book does well.
