INTERVIEW: Rachel Sparks plus #Giveaway!

Today we're talking to a very special lady, Rachel Sparks. Rachel just recently wrote her very first M/M romance, though she's a longtime fan of the genre! Please give her a very warm welcome and enjoy her giveaway (details at the end of the post)!

Hello Rachel and welcome to The Hat Party <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

A genre-specific virus has attacked you, rendering you INCAPABLE of writing your chosen genre. What do you do now?!

Well, I would cry for days, months and then beg my daughter in law Brittany to type it while I dictate it to her. It would take a lot of begging since she hates typing but I would bribe her with a kitten.

Your thoughts on libraries: GO!

I love libraries. I love the smell of books. But to be honest the local library here needs to update. They are so far behind.

Be honest. Be TOTALLY honest. How’s your handwriting?

Horrible

How do you handle reviews? Would you rather have NO reviews ever or a slew of stab-ya-in-the-gut negative reviews?

To be honest on all nine of my books I only have 2 reviews. Yeah pretty sad.

If they were handing out awards for writing assets, in which category would you snag first place?

According to my daughter-in-law and my beta reader it would be villains and sex scenes. *shrugs*

If you could go back to any point in your timeline to encourage yourself, when would you go and what would you say?

Back to the year 1989 the day of my best friend’s father’s funeral; when I was sitting at Burger King with my mom before I went to work at Belk’s. I would say…don’t do it…see that guy staring at you don’t go out with him. You have a lot ahead of you and you will be a writer but you need to not go out with that guy.

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!)

Joe stood against the wall at the barn dance. He wasn’t dancing with anyone. He didn’t come with anyone and he didn’t plan on dancing with anyone. He was different and he knew he was. He reckoned he knew he like men instead of girls was back 5 years ago when he was 15 and had a disastrous night with a woman.

Now looking across the dance floor, the only thing that was causing him to catch his breath and sending blood to his manhood was the cowboy heading his way. Joe licked his lips. He was coming his way. Joe was nervous. He looked down trying to calm himself and make sure he didn’t embarrass himself.

Heath knew what he wanted when he saw Joe walk into the dance. He had been noticing the way Joe had been looking at him. The young man was hot.

Heath walked up to Joe. “Hey, you want to get out of here. I mean it is hot and…”

Joe licked his lips. “Sure, this dance is dead anyway.”

They headed out to the lake. After tethering their horses, they walked over to some rocks.

Joe looked at him. “So?”

Heath reached out and cupped Joe’s face. Their eyes gazed at each other, but drifted close when their lips met in a mutual kiss.

How long do you think you’ll survive the zombie apocalypse?

Well I will be in my writer’s cave with everything I need. So I guess I would survive for a while.

What do you dream about, writing wise—deepest, most hidden writing goal! Nothing is too big or too wild.

Well my writing dream is to have my book that is coming out in December called Shattered Hearts Shattered Dreams made into a movie and the lead would be played by Matt Smith.

And finally, for THE most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kind of dachshunds?

A cute and cuddly one.

The Love They Have For Each Other Was Strong…

~1867~

Adam Colbert took Jarrod Baker up on his offer to train him in the law end of ranching contracts. Adam always believed you could never have enough education. Jarrod felt something for Adam as soon as he saw him sneaking late into the lecture. As they grow closer together and their love grows stronger, family members and outsiders want to break them apart. Will their love last or will they be forced to choose?

Excerpt:

© 2014 Rachel M Sparks

Jarrod found Adam at Ser Toda the place where they had planned to build their house. He sat on his horse and just stared at Adam for a little bit. He sighed as he got off his horse and tethered him to a tree. He watched Adam staring out at the lake.

Adam knew Jarrod had found him. He waited for Jarrod to get closer before speaking. “I can’t do this anymore Jarrod. There are just too many scars, wounds.” Tears fell down his cheeks.
Jarrod felt like his world was collapsing and there was nothing he could do about it. “Adam…”
Adam shook his head. “Don’t, just don’t. I can’t, I’m not that strong at least not anymore.” He looked down at the cane in his hand.

Jarrod moved closer and placed his hands on Adam and turned him to face him. It broke his heart to see Adam hurting so much. “Some scars are visible and some are not. I can’t live without you Adam. To me you are beautiful, you are my everything. Every breath I take, every beat of my heart is for you.” He moved his hands up to cup Adam’s face. His thumbs wiped away the tears.

“You are not alone. I’m here. Together we can do this, we can make it. Nobody can break us apart or tear us down as long as we are together. We are stronger together. I love you Adam and I know you love me.”

Adam nodded his head.

Jarrod got closer to Adam’s mouth and then his lips covered Adam’s.

BONUS QUESTIONS

What inspired you to write To Be Whole?

A lot has happened to me over the past year. Most people know that I have IBS and sometimes it gets so bad that all I can do is just read. I love to read anyway. So, I was looking for something to read. I went through my closet and dug out some old papers from college. I found this one paper from one of my sociology classes. We had to write about something dramatic that changed our lives, something like that. We didn’t put our names on it. Well I began to read them. It was funny how I never really paid attention to this one particular one. But I was around 24 at the time and raising my son by myself. Anyway, I sat back and thought about my life. The things I believed in and was passionate about. I always had this one story burning in me. Wanting to come out. But I was too scared to write it. I asked myself why…why I don’t stand up for what I believe in. Love is love. People have a right to love who they love. So many people have tried to take away what I believe in and my right to do what I believe in. So, To Be Whole was born.

Is there anything special you’d like us to know about your book?

This story takes place in 1867. I know many people don’t like westerns but I have a love for that time period and thought it would be interesting to see how two men would be able to love each other back in that time period. You have your nosy Widow Lady who always trying to fix you up. You have your family to contend with. Then the image of what a man should be like.

What are your hopes for this title?

I hope to touch people with it. I hope people will come to see love is love. I hope they see how beautiful love is. I hope people will realize that no matter how tough life gets that when they have the love of their life with them that they can make it through anything.

BOOK BLAST: Designated Bottoms plus #Giveaway!

So, what happens when you get a bunch of m/m writers together on a panel at a steamy little convention called Authors After Dark in Savannah?

In this case, we all sat around with the readers who came to our panel and chattered and laughed like idiots, and we talked about what we liked to read and write. There was a lot of smutty puns, and it was all fun and games until someone uttered the fateful phrase, “Right, and every story has to have a designated bottom.”

The writer and editor in me both went, “ooooh”. And I said, “Hey, does anyone want in on an anthology for next year with this theme?”

Enough of the writers at that panel, and a few who weren’t, said yes, and Designated Bottoms was born. When I sent out the call, this is what I said.

You’ve heard about Designated Drivers? Well, what about a Designated Bottom? The theme is open to all m/m stories where one man is a designated bottom boy, Whether self-imposed or by the Dom/lover/alpha of the pack or simply (either true or not) by society. Feel free to play with burly bottoms who surprise the deceptively sweet top, or with the too-smart kid who's the pushy bottom to end all bottoms. BDSM is fine, but not mandatory. A bottom may simply like to catch instead of pitch.

The stories I received delighted me. From a first-time cowboy and his new lover to a hardass Sergeant falling for a determined young soldier, from a hot gamer geek who doesn’t date to a sweet young thing on his first visit to a BDSM club, there’s something for everyone. There are princes and paupers, werekitties and strippers, and skinny twink-looking tops and big, gentle bottoms. They all left me fanning my hot cheeks and smiling at how the end result was two men in love, no matter how they got there.

The authors in Designated Bottoms have all reminded me why I fell in love with m/m as a genre damned near fifteen years ago, and of why I’m still writing, and publishing those stories today.
We’d like to dedicate this book to all the readers at Authors After Dark who thought this collection was a great idea, and to all the readers who keep us going every day by reading our books and letting us know they like them! I hope y’all love these stories as much as I do!

Some men are bottoms by birth, others by choice. Whatever the reason, a designated bottom is someone who’s happy to surrender, to submit, or just catch instead of pitch!

In Czech Me Out, by BA Tortuga, Korde discovers what it’s like to fall for someone when food truck owner Josh takes on the cowboy virgin. Katey Hawthorne’s gamer grad student Paul doesn’t date. He keeps things strictly physical. So why is Sammy so important to him in The Mistell? Kitty shifter and stripper Aleks doesn’t mix business with pleasure, but he thinks Rafe might just be the master for him in Julia Talbot’s Faster Bobcat.

Sean Michael’s Peter isn’t sure about the club his friend takes him to, especially when Doms start hitting on him. Experienced Dom Rupert is happy to help, explaining about that Little Square of Cloth. In Sgt. Hardass, by Shannon West, recent ex-Army man Jake meets up with a man he has history with, and Chad isn’t sure he can explain himself and defuse Jake’s anger. In the Prince of Paupers by Kiernan Kelly, Prince Liam and longtime friend Deacon have to go back to Deacon’s Appalachian home, much to the prince’s dismay. And in Switching It Up by KC Wells, Jay knows he looks like a twink, but only hunky Dean understands that looks can be seriously deceptive.

From Czech Me Out by BA Tortuga

Josh had texted the fine cowboy as early as he felt comfortable doing it. He’d waited until nine. He figured it was gratifying that he got an immediate response.

“Noon?” he’d sent, and when he got an affirmative, he’d send his address. Then he set about making lunch.

He could tear that sweet body up, turn the Marlboro Man inside out and make Korde like it. He would soften the guy up with a few barbecue-filled potato skins... Barbecue, the redneck aphrodisiac.

Josh grinned. He’d swayed more than one hot little cowboy with his special sauce and some crispy potatoes. Of course, he’d never asked one to come to his house before, and certainly hadn’t gotten so interested so damned fast.

He’d never changed his sheets and made sure he was stocked with lube and rubbers, either. Not on a not-even-a-first-date. Lord. He was hopeful today, for sure.

Hopeful, horny and... oh, man, he needed an ‘h’ word...

The doorbell rang, saving him from having to be too creative. He told his cock to stay down for a bit and went to answer.

Frack and Frick were yapping their damn fool heads off, wagging and bouncing. Silly mutts. “Y’all get down.”

Josh opened the door a few inches. “You’re not afraid of dogs are you?”

“Not even a bit.” Korde leaned down and gave scritches, easy as pie.

Those two beagle-shepherd monstrosities went nuts, yodeling and wagging and begging.

Find Julia at @juliatalbot on Twitter, or at www.juliatalbot.com

Sean Michael: Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

Kiernan Kelly: Kiernan Kelly lives in the wilds of the alligator-infested U.S. Southeast, slathered in SPF 45, drinking colorful tropical, hi-octane concoctions served by thong-clad cabana boys.

All right, the truth is that she spends her time locked in the dark recesses of her office, writing gay erotic romance while chained to a temperamental laptop, drinking coffee, and dreaming of thong-clad cabana boys.

Sigh.

To date, Kiernan has over a dozen novels in print and ebook, and a plethora of short stories in both formats.

KC Wells: Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C.Wells always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way.

K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, where the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings – writing about men in love was even hotter...

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career.

INTERVIEW: Rory Ni Coileain plus #Giveaway!

Hello Rory and welcome to The Hat Party <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

Tell us about a time you were changed.

The first time I wrote m/m romance. I was utterly sure I couldn’t do it, for a lot of reasons, but a dear friend of mine asked me to try it as a favor to her. So I did, and it was like opening the floodgates to a dam. I am a completely different person today.

What makes you inexplicably happy?

That’s kind of tough, most of my happiness tends to be explicable. *winks* Maybe listening to my 18-year-old son go on at length about his recent discovery of My Little Pony, and all the fanfic he’s planning to write. I obviously did something right somewhere. (Oh, wait, that’s explicable, isn’t it? Dang.)

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!) I think I’ll let Tiernan do it. From HARD AS STONE.

Fingertips stroked the back of Kevin’s hand, gently, possessively, and he fought to suppress a shiver. Not hard enough, though, because there was that smile again. A lazy, sensual smile that absolutely should not be on the lips of anyone he hadn’t spent at least twenty-four hours having mind-blowing sex with. Which short list did not include anyone of this seductive blond’s gender.
                Yet.
As if he’d heard Kevin’s thought, the man arched that ringed eyebrow; the grip on his hand tightened, a thumb slid around to stroke his palm. “You don’t even know why you’re here, do you?”
“And I suppose you do?” His voice came out gruff, harsh; the air thrummed around the two of them, tingling with a dark electricity.
The blond chuckled, a sound like warm honey. “You’re buttoned down tight, lanan. And you came in here because…”
                Shit.
                “Secretly, you want someone…”
                Damn, damn, DAMN
                “Someone like me…”
Long thick blond hair. Black leather jacket, gleaming with a sheen like melted butter in the flickering light from the bar. White muscle shirt. Jeans first painted on and then sliced half off. God damn.
                “…to unbutton you.”

Describe yourself using a literary quote.

"Neither Bloody Nor Bowed", by Dorothy Parker

They say of me, and so they should,
It's doubtful if I come to good.
I see acquaintances and friends
Accumulating dividends,
And making enviable names
In science, art, and parlor games.
But I, despite expert advice,
Keep doing things I think are nice,
And though to good I never come-
Inseparable my nose and thumb!

What is your super-secret, wildest, most outlandish writing dream? (Nothing is too wild!)

Ever read Pygmalion? I want to write myself a SoulShare. Or maybe a Gille Dubh. (As for things within the realm of actual possibility, how about being a RITA finalist with a m/m novel? No LGBT novel, novella, or short story even made the finals this year…)

Give us 5 ½ words of wisdom.

You’re always stronger than you thi

You can go back to any point in your life to give you past self a pep-talk. How old is your past self and what do you say?

My former self is 20 years old, and reading the rejection letter she got from Marion Zimmer Bradley telling her that Ms. Bradley couldn’t understand why anyone with so little talent even wanted to consider becoming a writer. And I’d tell her “Don’t you worry about that. You’re better than that. And you’re going to go out there and have a terrific life that’s going to give you so many stories to tell, once you start you won’t be able to stop.”

Your thoughts on libraries: GO!

My very first coherent memory is of the time my parents took me to the library when I was two. I remember it from very high up, because I was on my dad’s shoulders. My parents told me that the library was a special place where they had more books than I could imagine and people could take home as many books as they wanted. And when they went to leave, I had my first and only public temper tantrum – I wanted my books! They explained to me that you couldn’t bring home books without a library card, and that I couldn’t get a library card until I could sign my name. They thought that that was that (wow, my editor would faint if she saw that sentence!) but when we got home I bugged them until they taught me to print my name. And I had my own library card before I was three.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in your career and what did you learn from it?
Probably signing a contract to produce four full-length novels in a year. I learned that when I do absolutely nothing for a full year except work the Evil Day Job, come home, and write, I get very cranky.

And finally, for THE most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kinds of dachshunds?

Dachshund puppies! I had my dog at the vet one afternoon and a lady had a dachshund puppy on a leash – it was bounding around so much it looked like one of those toy helicopters on a cord!

Hard As Stone

Tiernan Guaire is a Fae in exile. Forced from the Realm into the human world for the unimaginable crime of a brother’s murder, he lives by a century-old vow, to trust no one, and never to allow himself to love or be loved.

Kevin Almstead has just lost his future, to a vote of the partners at his law firm. Trying to escape for an evening, he ventures into Purgatory, the hottest all-male nightclub in Washington, D.C., where he allows himself to be seduced by a stranger with long blond hair and ice-blue eyes.

Drawn into a Soulshare bond with his intended one-night stand, Tiernan soon learns that the most ancient and evil enemy of the Fae still walks the human world, and it will stop at nothing – certainly not Kevin Almstead – to possess the magick of a Noble Fae.

Excerpt:

Tiernan stirred, muttered under his breath, the first signs of distress he’d shown since falling asleep. Passing out. Whatever. Kevin sighed, resting a hand lightly on the blond’s smooth chest; in short order, he found himself running his fingertips lightly over his lover’s chest, tracing the lines of the muscles, and then down, a fingertip traveling along the intricate tattoo over his hip. Tiernan wasn’t buff, not like some men were and Kevin himself tried to be. Lean, hard-bodied, almost impossibly fit. And with that long, unruly blond hair, and his crystalline blue eyes, Tiernan would turn heads in rooms full of men or women. And no doubt had.

Mine.

The Fae rolled onto his side, away from Kevin; chuckling softly, Kevin settled himself behind his lover, glancing over the shoulder in front of him at the bedside clock. He could still get almost three hours of sleep if he was lucky. He wrapped an arm around Tiernan, nuzzled into the curve where neck met shoulder, breathed in the scent of wild hair and sated male body and honey, and closed his eyes. So this is what magic smells like.

Gale Force

Conall Dary is the most powerful mage born to the Fae race since the Realm was parted from the human world, over two thousand years ago. But that very power condemns him to a lifetime of celibacy, because sex calls to power, and he has power enough to drain a world. When he refuses to use his talents for a Noble lady’s petty revenge, he finds himself shanghaied to the human world, his soul torn in half and his magick blocked.

Josh LaFontaine is the beautifully inked owner of Raging Art-On, a Washington, D.C. tattoo and piercing parlor. While taking part in New York City’s Pride march with a former lover’s dance company, his world changes forever when the man of his dreams materializes out of nowhere at his feet. Josh’s sensual and loving touch, the first Conall has ever known, may be enough to give him back the magick he’s lost. But before they can complete their Soulshare, a terrible accident leaves Conall bodiless, lost, and invisible, to everyone except – maybe – the human with whom he shares a soul. But Josh will need to find him before the ancient evil of the Marfach does or everything they have – and more – will be lost.

Excerpt:

The sense of relief as he got out of the taxi was like nothing he’d ever felt before, and even knowing most of it wasn’t his own didn’t make it any less overwhelming. Only the presence of the foot traffic in and out of Purgatory kept him from falling to his knees in gratitude, maybe doing some pavement-kissing.

Well, that and a sense of haste only slightly less urgent than a cattle prod. He fumbled the keys off the hook at his belt and unlocked the deadbolt, then keyed in the combination on the touchpad, wincing as the tiny crystalline tones tried to pierce his eardrums.

Are you sure you can do this, lanan? There might be another way. Just let me think, now that I can.

Josh shook his head. Letting himself into the small client lounge in the front, he locked the door behind himself and made straight for the tattoo studio. “No time. Every minute you’re disembodied makes it less likely you’ll ever get back, you said so yourself. And me…” He paused, his hand on the doorknob of his studio. “I’m not sure how much longer I can stand this.”

Deep Plunge

For the last six hundred years or so, the only things reminding Lochlann Doran he’s a Fae have been his faceted aquamarine eyes and the fact that he can’t die. He’s been a wanderer for so long in the human world – over two thousand years – that he’s lost his magick, including the gift of healing that goes along with being a Fae of the Demesne of Water. Finding his SoulShare might get it back for him. But it might kill him, too.

Garrett Templar has been living on borrowed time, in a sense, since he was eighteen, when one of the johns he entertained to pay the bills while he danced at Purgatory infected him with HIV. It was always supposed to be a “manageable” disease, though, at least until a cure was found. Except he’s just found out that the virus in his system has inexplicably mutated into full-blown AIDS, and no known drug cocktail can even slow it down.

And when Lochlann and Garrett find each other at last, on Purgatory’s dance floor, the only thing as urgent as their need for one another is the hunger of an ancient evil to do whatever is necessary to possess Lochlann’s magick…

Excerpt:

Shit. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag, ready to swing it -- or ditch it, if it looked like that would help him escape . And for one sick, sweaty, gut-wrenching moment, he was ten years old again, hearing the kids closing in behind him, knowing there was no way in hell he was going to get away without another split lip, ruined shirt, blackened eye. Almost hearing his mother’s voice again. Garrett Lee Templar, I swear, you find more trouble than any ten other boys ever dreamed of. Do you think I can just make new clothes appear out of thin air?

“Garrett?”

He recognized that voice from somewhere. Slowly, he turned. And stared up into eyes that gleamed blue even in the crappy light from the streetlight on the corner.

“Lochlann?” He hadn’t had to rent his ass out for a while now, but the idea of a john following him home from the club still made his skin crawl. Yet there was something about those eyes, something different.

No. Fuck that shit. You get hurt the worst when you let yourself hope.

Firestorm

Rian Sheridan is a foundling, a Northern Irish Catholic corner boy whose world was destroyed in fire, and reborn the same way, beside an Orangemen’s bonfire last July the Twelfth. A consuming, dimly-remembered pain in his past calls to him, taunting him, daring him to find it and lose himself to it in the S&M underground of Belfast.

Cuinn an Dearmad is the last surviving Fae Loremaster, and he’s just seen the beginning of the death of the Realm, the haven of the Fae race. The only hope of stopping it starts with him finding the Prince Royal of Fire he stole from the cradle, and lost in the human world, many years ago. He has a few guesses about where that hope ends, and he doesn’t like any of them.

Rian and Cuinn are an impossible pairing, two SoulShared Fae. Any two Fae will strike sparks, but these two Fae are a conflagration. Unable to stand one another, yet drawn into an escalating series of sexual collisions, their passion will either save a world or destroy it.

He gave up on trying to sleep, rolling onto his back and lying sprawled out in the great bed fit for a king. Or a Prince. Shite. He didn’t want to be a fecking Royal. Whatever that meant. But if there was one thing he could say he’d learned in life, it was that what he wanted had fuck all to do with what happened to him.

Though ever since the Twalf, last summer, there was one thing he nearly always got, when he wanted it. The thrill. They’d thought to break him that night, and perhaps they had, but after the breaking he’d been made anew. Into a man who craved what the bastards sought to shame him with, and who used them, in the end, more cruelly than they had used him. After all, he could use them, and others like them, any time he liked.

Addicted? Hell, no. Victorious.

BONUS QUESTION:

What inspired you to write Hard as Stone

HARD AS STONE started out as a short story for a Facebook competition – it didn’t win, but it ended up being pieces of three or four chapters of the book. (Bonus points to anyone who can guess which chapters!)

About the Author:

Rory Ni Coileain majored in creative writing, back when Respectable Colleges didn't offer such a major, so she designed it herself - being careful to ensure that she never had to take a class before nine in the morning or take a Hemingway survey course. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa at the age of nineteen, sent off her first short story to an anthology being assembled by an author she idolized, got shot down in flames, and found other things to do, such as nightclub singing, for the next thirty years or so, until her stories started whispering to her. Now she's a lawyer, a legal editor, a sopraltenor in her church choir, the mother of a budding video game designer, and amanuensis to a host of fantastic creatures who are all anxious to tell their stories, and sometimes even wait their turns.
