INTERVIEW: Raine O'Tierney plus #Giveaway! #MMRomance

This is usually the part of the interview where I introduce my guest and their adorable hat, maybe mention their giveaway and if they brought a cute pet with them, but today is a bit unique as today's guest! Since I thought it would be really weird if I "interviewed" myself, I reached out to my friends and fellow writers in the community and asked them to come up with a set of questions to use today. Ps. Isn't my hat totes adorable? And there IS a giveaway :)

I'm ready for Halloween in this hat, baby!

What's your favorite smell?

Totally true story...I'm "smell blind." I could (and accidentally have...sigh) stand over a vat of formaldehyde and not smell anything. Oh GOD. Is this why I am the way I am today?! I've never smelled roses or cookies... Nothing.

What would you do if you switched genders for a day? Mom might read this so...I'll just say, y'know, the "standard answer." I'm pretty sure you know what that means. (Why my mom reading that and not, y'know, my books worries me is beyond me.)

If you had a time machine and could go back and fix or change anything would you do it? If so, what would it be?

Despite the danger it would cause to the timeline...I think I would go back and try to prevent a younger, angrier me from hurting my friends thoughtlessly and selfishly.

Is there a book you wish you had written?

There's a ton of yaoi I wish I could claim. Titles by Yaya Sakuragi, Mishima Kazuhiko, and Hinago Takanaga, to name a very few. Also... I'd gladly have written Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool, The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, obviously Harry Potter (minus the cringe-worthy epilogue), Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box... The list goes on.

Where did the idea for The Hat Party come from?

I adore hats, especially tiny hats and fascinators. I also genuinely love encouraging people and cheering them on and promoting them...So I got this sort of zany idea in my head, what if I could combine my love of hats with my love of lifting people up? Author interviews and promo + hats?! WIN!

Favorite go to comfort food and outfit & why?

Comfort food is definitely chicken wings, either teriyaki or mild (yes, I'm totally a wimp!) Comfort outfit is pajama pants and my Mumford & Sons Gentlemen of the Road concert shirt. I have, and will again, eaten my comfort food while wearing my comfort outfit. :)

What are you wearing? And no fibbing!

Super kickass rockstar jeans, sparkly black top, no shoes, and a my 108 wooden Buddhist beads twisted up into a bracelet. I'm pretty sure my mascara is smearing, though. It's been a long day.

Please tell us about your main character. What does he want? What does he love? What does he fear?

In the whole interview, this question is the hardest to explain because, y'know, spoilers! That may sound weird, but it's true. The main characters of this story are Tommy and his great-grand daughter, Autumn--it's really hard to separate one from the other in the narrative. Her wants are simple: she doesn't want her Great-Pop to die, his are more complex--he's caught between the world of the living and somewhere else...with someone else who lures him.

What do you like to read?

For being a writer of sweet gay romance, this is going to sound really weird, but I like to read...Newbery Award winners. Seriously. Those books we all hated reading as kids? I devour them. The writing is just so beautiful and I've learned so much from J-Fic Awards. Oh, to win a Newbery...I suppose I would have to write a J-Fic first.

And finally, for the most important dachshunds have a sweet tooth?
You know what? Growing up, both sides of the family had dachshunds and when we would all get together at Christmas, it was like a tidal wave of dachshunds. My grandparents on my dad's side gave their doxies the occasional peppermint. And one of their dogs--this really funny red mini--would take hers and lick all the stripes off of it before she ate it. When the hubs and I adopted our own dachshund, Klaus (wearer of many, many hats!) I was hoping he would also do the adorable stripe-licking thing. Nope. He's a chomper. CHOMP.

Twelve-year-old Autumn's world is shattered when her beloved Great-Pop, Tommy Johnson, suffers a stroke that leaves him comatose. With everyone around her resigning themselves to the inevitable, Autumn is the only one not willing to give up. She and Great-Pop have more secret stories to share with each other, after all. More stories about Roy McMillan—the great love of Tommy's life whom he lost fifty years ago.
Autumn struggles to keep Great-Pop on this side of death's door. But how can she compete with the beautiful and mysterious Valley—a place of surreal magic where the sun never fully sets? Especially when there's someone familiar in the Valley who will do everything he can to keep Great-Pop from returning to her.

But Rook had no interest in waiting for permission. He’d come forward, snaking his arms around Toren’s sheet-covered waist and pulling him hard against his body. “It’s just a kiss,” Rook breathed before he put his lips against Toren’s. Should he protest? Had he protested? Toren couldn’t remember. In that moment there was nothing but Rook’s firm lips, gently teasing his own apart. Toren kissed back, tasting the other man, sucking at his bottom lip. Rook’s mouth was intoxicating, and quite suddenly, Toren forgot why he’d ever resisted. He liked kissing Rook. But after only an appetizer’s worth of his mouth, Rook pulled away. The sensation of their mouths pressed together lingered, and Toren was dumb with the moment. Lost on it. Uncertain what they’d even been talking about.
“Do you remember me now?” Rook asked.
“Mmn,” Toren agreed, warmth lingering on his lips. “Rook.”
Silence was his reply. The arms around his waist fell away, leaving him feeling cold.
Toren slowly opened his eyes to find he was standing alone, clutching his sheet, as Rook walked away from him toward the staircase.

*What inspired you to write Most Beautiful Words?
It started as a little story I told my husband as we were cleaning the kitchen one day. Couldn’t have been more than a few sentences at most, but we both got a little choked up at the end. Never had a snippet of idea bring tears to my eyes. When NaNoWriMo 2012 rolled around and I was trying to figure out what to write, hubs reminded me of that snippet. The story poured out of me in 13 days and took a year to revise.

*Is there anything special you’d like us to know about it?This is my all-time favorite thing I've ever written. (Sorry future Raine with your future stories!)

*What are your hopes for this title?I hope it speaks to you. I hope the characters get into your heart the way they are in mine. And I'm not going to lie, I'd love to have it spark enough interest to warrant an audiobook.
