INTERVIEW: Louise Lyons plus #Giveaway!

Today we're talking to Louise Lyons who ROCKS the hat! (Bonus points for bringing a picture of her adorable pups, Trojan.)

Hello Louise and welcome to The Hat Party <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

What was the trigger that made you first get serious about your writing?

The reaction to a trilogy I wrote on FanFiction.  It created a big following for me and the comments and reviews I received made me think – hey, I can do this! Why don’t I find out if a publisher likes my work as much as my FanFic fans seem to?

You can go back to any point in your life to give your past self a pep-talk.  How old is your past self and what do you say?

I’d be 30 years old (yes, I did more foolish things in my 30s than when I was younger).  I’d tell myself that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.  They have to really want your help and in accepting it, make the effort needed themselves to make it worthwhile.  I lost a lot of things that were very important to me, by trying to help someone, who I thought was a real friend, and who I thought I might be able to do some good for. I sincerely wish I hadn’t.

What is your secret writing dream? (your most wild, outlandish dream!)

Well, I can do wild and outlandish!  In my writing dreams, I would write a best seller that makes me enough money to move somewhere hot and not very well populated, where I could spend my days in the sun with my laptop, or doing outdoorsy things such as hiking, swimming in the sea, running, horse-riding etc. Oh, and I’d climb Kilimanjaro – always wanted to go and do that, just because it’s there, you know?

If writing were poisonous to you, would you continue to do it?

That’s a tough one, because I’m a bit of a baby when it comes to getting sick. But my writing is really important to me, so I guess I’d grin and bear it, and carry on.

Describe yourself using song lyrics.

This is a verse from If Today Was Your Last Day by Nickelback. The song moves me to tears every time I hear it. I’m a big believer in life being too short and needing to make the most of it. I even have Carpe Diem tattooed on my back to remind me!

If today was your last day
Would you make your mark, by mending a broken heart?
You know it’s never too late to shoot for the stars
Regardless of who you are
So do whatever it takes
‘Cause you can’t rewind a moment in this life
Let nothing stand in your way
‘Cause the hands of time are never on your side.

Would you walk across the country on foot for the assurance of a Big Six publishing contract?

I’d walk across the country just for the fun of it, because I’m crazy like that and I love hiking!  But it helps that my country is less than 200 miles across, on the official “Coast to Coast” route!

You have 200 words – Make. Me. Swoon.

Okay, this is a short excerpt from Conflicted. This is 202 words, I think. Enjoy!

Paul hadn’t meant for things to get that far. It was supposed to be just a bit of fun, fooling around with hands and mouths, the same as he always did. But somehow he had spent the night with Greg, and now he slid his legs farther apart, giving Greg an invitation. The big man shifted his body until it hovered over Paul’s. He moved his knees between Paul’s, lowered himself, and ground his cock against the firm ass beneath him.

“Greg,” Paul groaned. He had to tell Greg to stop. No way was he going to do this. He didn’t want Greg, not really. It was just a spur of the moment thing, because he had woken up hard. Paul certainly didn’t want it going any further. Greg’s cock was big – much too big, when Paul considered he hadn’t done this in five years. Greg shifted slightly, and his erection nestled in Paul’s crack, hot, throbbing, slippery wet at the tip, eager to thrust into him. His breath was warm on Paul’s neck and he moaned as he rubbed himself against Paul. Paul’s erection pulsed fiercely and his heart raced. He stopped thinking and simply felt.

“What?” Greg muttered.

“Fuck me.”

What is one mistake you’ve made during your writing career that you’ve learned and grown from?

Letting myself be affected by harsh (and personal) criticism.  This goes back a few years to my first venture into FanFiction.  A couple of people took a dislike to something I wrote, but made their comments personal and unkind.  I took it to heart and stopped writing, except for my own amusement, none of which saw the light of day.  I’ve learned that there is always going to be someone who doesn’t like what you write – we’re all different – and if some of these people express the way they feel in rude and hurtful fashion, then that’s their problem.  My writing is too important to me, to let myself take things to heart like I did then.  If I’d realised this at the time, I might be 3 or 4 years ahead of where I am now.

Is it harder for you to talk for an hour straight, or stay silent for an hour straight?

Definitely harder to stay silent.  I am a regular chatterbox and am frequently told to shut up by friends and family who can’t get a word in!

And finally, for the most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the best kind of dachshunds?

The black and tan ones, like this – just because they look like really tiny weeny versions of my Dobermann.

~ ~ ~

Two competing gangs of car and drag racing enthusiasts with a shared history of pain and rivalry leading to outright hatred. Two men from opposite sides of the tracks, yet more in common than they’d like to admit.

Paul Appleton is a troubled man who has never been in a relationship, having lost everyone he cared for in his life. His mother died when he was very young and subsequently, he lost his brother and his best friend. Now Paul is convinced love will always end in tears.

Greg was living on the streets after his parents died and was stabbed by a junkie, ending up in hospital. The Buchanans took Greg under their wing while doing charity work, and Greg joined their loving family when he was adopted. He and his siblings are also car enthusiasts with much more money and therefore better cars than Paul Appleton’s gang.

When they eventually find a connection, Paul fights his feelings and tries to convince himself his lover is only a temporary bit of fun, but Greg has other ideas.

About the Author:

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of eight, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties.

Posting stories based on some of her favorite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad Dobermann, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races into the house afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and joy, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.
