INTERVIEW: Tina Blenke

Today we are talking to the beautiful Tina Blenke whose best dachshunds answer won my heart! <3

Hello Tina and welcome to The Hat Party <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

If you could have a conversation with 13-year-old yourself right now, what would you say to her?

There would be a lot I would want to say but shouldn’t or else I’d interfere with the creation of who I am today. I guess I would have to say words of encouragement instead. Definitely, would have to tell myself not to take anything too seriously. I was more grown up at 13 than I am now or at least that was what I thought then!

Describe yourself using song lyrics.

Dark Shines by Muse

Passing by, you light up my darkest skies
You'll take only seconds to draw me in
So be mine and your innocence
I will consume
Dark shines
Bringing me down
Making my heart feel sore
'Cause it's good
Hold your hands up to your eyes again
Hide from the scary scenes, suppress your fears
So be mine and your innocence
I will consume
Dark shines
Bringing me down
Making my heart feel sore
'Cause it's good
Your dark shines
Bringing me down
Making my heart feel sore
'Cause it's good
Dark shines
Bringing me down
Making my heart feel sore
'Cause it's good

How do you handle reviews? Would you rather have NO reviews ever or a slew of stab-ya-in-the-gut negative reviews? (Not that EITHER of these will happen to you!)

This is a tough one to answer. When I set out to select something for my read pile, I don’t read the reviews for that book.  I go by what my friends are suggesting or read other authors that I know. When it comes to my own book, it’s hard to not read what someone else has said about it. There will always be some who might not like it and those who love it and I try not to read too much into it but it’s so hard not to get a little defensive. A sick twisted side of me would rather have a bunch of negative reviews so that I know people are reading it, but ask me another day and I will have to change my answer. Can I reserve the right to change my mind?!

What is your superpower? What is your Kryptonite?

I can speak fluent sarcasm, I don’t take anything seriously, and I can have fun in almost any situation. Easy going describes me perfectly. Unfortunately, I am afraid of anything scary. It’s confusing because I love watching shows and movies that freak me out so I have to leave on all the lights to watch them. I get terrible nightmares, too! It’s like I’m five or something! I was able to write Athan’s Kiss and put everything in there that freaks me out. Don’t worry though, there’s plenty to scare me and I envision another book or two.

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!)

"You smell so fucking good," Quentin whispered in my ear moments before his talented tongue delved in lightly like the flutter of a butterfly's wings. How long was I going to lie and insist that this didn't mean anything to me. Just this one time just-to-make-sure-I'm-gay-fuck so he could get on with his life. More shaking in my knees and it was a damn good thing we were vertical because my mind was out of control with the damn thinking when Quentin's straining prick was in my hand. His fucking prick was in my hand! It was suddenly hard to breathe and I grabbed his gorgeous face, straddling his body, and forcing his hands above his head so I could kiss him unrestrained. Licking, tasting, and feeling that wonderful cock twitching along the crease of my ass.
"You want me? Tell me you want me, Jake. Tell you want my fat cock in your ass. Take what you need and I'll catch you when you fall." I moaned. There was no fucking way this was Quentin's first time. That sneaky cocksucker. I smiled just a second before I pressed my own leaking dick to those lovely lips.

A GENRE SPECIFIC-VIRUS has targeted you and rendered you incapable of writing ½ of your chosen genre (M/M Paranormal)…Which half would be harder to lose? The M/M half or the Paranormal half?

The hardest one? Most definitely the M/M half. I’ve written a M/F short story or two but the romance just isn’t there. I don’t relate to the typical heroine’s mind set and it’s difficult for me to love her which is how I turned to M/M in the first place. Paranormal draws me in as a reader and this is where my mind likes to take me. But a story without strong M/M characters? No thanks!

What is one mistake you’ve made during your writing career that you’ve learned and grown from?

I’d like to learn more about self-promotion. It isn’t my strong suit, especially since I have a full time day job, but it’s peaked my interest and I should spend more time developing and honing that skill set.

What are you going to do to survive during the zombie apocalypse?

I’ve already started training! There’s a fun app that I like to run to at the gym that trains you to outrun zombies. I’m also building up my team of scientists and health professionals. It doesn’t hurt to have a few people to use as human shields, either.

Give a shout-out to another author who may, or may not, know how much you appreciate them.

I’d like to give a shout out to Cardeno C. I love all of his work and I love how involved he is in social media and just being an all-around great person. He’s funny and down to earth and I would it would be fantastic to be loved a fraction of the amount that he is by his fans. He’s the one author that I’d love to meet and have a pleasant conversation with over a hot beverage.

And finally, for THE most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kinds of dachshunds?

Uh-oh. Sounds like a trick question to me. I’ve recently come under the spell of having dogs and I love it when they snuggle up next to you no matter what kind of day you’ve had. These furry little critters think you’re awesome and don’t care what anybody else thinks. So, I think the best ones are the ones that hold your heart.

(GREAT answer! ~ Raine)

Athan is a newly converted vampire with no recollection of who or what he is. He meets Evander, a history and mythology buff, at a new age bookstore while researching about vampires. The two men are lonely and enjoy each other’s company and slowly become friends. Athan has never been in a relationship with another man and Evander has never recovered from a painful past and does not believe in pursuing a more substantial commitment. Meanwhile, there have been a series of murders throughout Boston targeting underprivileged teenagers. Athan admits to Evander that not only is he a vampire but that he suspects himself to be the killer.

Blurb:

Most of the night was spent talking. Athan was not a talkative person but Evander more than made up for it. Evander locked up Divine Readings and the two of them walked to Evander’s apartment with Evander reciting stories the entire time. He could find all manner of topics to talk about and most of them where centered on ancient folklore and mythologies. He was in the middle of such a tale about Persephone when Athan stopped him.

“The sun will be up soon,” Athan said.

“Yes, I guess it will. There is nothing here and it’s only a matter of time before she comes after me again. I wish I knew what it was that she wanted and why she is after me, of all people. You know that night that I met her, when she was alive of course, she thought that I was the suspicious one that could have been after all of those kids. But she must know by now that it isn’t me. She was the one who killed Brandon,” Evander paused. “Why would she do that? Why would she kill someone who was one of her own?”

“Evander?”

“It just doesn’t make any sense. He was just as alone in the world as she was, and she still went after him.”

“Evander? Is it me?”

“You would have thought she would have gone after someone else instead of Brandon. But, then no one would go looking for him would they? He was alone. No one would miss him.”

“Evander? What about me?”

“But that’s just it isn’t it? There has to be more than one killer. It’s not only Diane. Someone was killing these runaways before Diane was ever killed and became a vampire. There was the one who turned her, wasn’t there? We are looking for another one aren’t we?”

“Evander!”

“What, Athan?” Evander turned to him in mid thought, annoyed at the intrusion since he realized that he was obviously onto something here.

“Maybe it’s me.”

“What? Don’t be absurd. You were…wait. What?”

“Maybe it’s me,” Athan repeated. “Evander, I can’t stay here much longer. The sun is beginning to rise.”

“What?” Then it hit him. Dawn. He had never seen Athan during the day.

“It’s true.”

“How is that possible?”

“I don’t know. There is a lot I don’t know. I remember waking up this way several months ago and I don’t know anything of my life before this and I’m afraid. I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

“Was it you?”

“I don’t know. It makes me sick to even think about it.”

It wasn’t until now that Evander noticed that Athan had been pacing again.

“Stay with me.” Evander’s words came before he thought about them. He had known people in his life that had been more evil than this man could ever be. He wasn’t threatened by Athan. Every moment he’d spent with him had brought him the safest memories of his entire life. This was what frightened him the most—not that he was listening to this unbelievable man revealing his dark secret, but that he was feeling something deep for this man.

“You said that you don’t know if it’s you or not. If you stay with me, I can watch over you and we can be sure that it isn’t you that is the cause of the murders.”

“I can’t do that. It would be too dangerous. For both of us.”

“Stay with me.”

“Evander, I care for you more than you can ever imagine. But if I am the cause, then I don’t want you anywhere near me. Diane is dangerous enough, but I can’t trust myself around you all of the time. Please don’t ask this of me.”

Athan had just shared his deepest darkest secret—that he was a vampire—and yet the thought of life without Athan frightened Evander much more. He should be afraid for his life, but yet he wanted Athan. He wanted nothing more than to lie in Athan’s arms and he couldn’t imagine Athan to be the monster that he was claiming to be.

“Athan?”

“Yes,” he answered quietly.

“When did it happen?”

“I don’t know.”

“Has it been the entire time I’ve known you?”

“Yes.”

“You have never once tried to harm me.”

“No, I haven’t, but it wasn’t without extreme care on my part. There are times when I can barely control myself, but to take another life would be against all that I know I am. I am an abomination and I don’t deserve whatever life that I have. I don’t know how it came to be, only that I exist the way you see me. I crave to take life. I have come close to ending the lives of others more times than I care to recount. But I’ll admit that I don’t know how long I can hold out or what my limitations are. I do know that when I am with you I feel stronger. The craving is lessened, though the pounding of your heart even now beckons to me. You make me feel alive, like the man I could have been rather than the killer I know I am. The potential to kill is still there, Evander, do not ever deny that part of me.”

“Can I ask how you eat?”

“Seriously, E? I’m a vampire. What is there to elaborate on? I drink blood.”

“Well, yeah, I know that…”

“You want to know the detailed mechanics of it? Do you want to know if I attack innocent babes in dark alleys and leave them drained of blood with silent screams on their lips?”

Evander stared at him with his mouth hanging open.

Athan smirked.

“You’re an ass.”

“Maybe. But I had you going for a while and the look on your face was worth it.”

About the Author:

Tina is a retired Air Force brat and has lived in several states as well as a handful of countries. She has always had a soft spot for literature and is a voracious reader. When she isn’t writing, she can be found cuddled up with a good book. Though Tina adores a thrilling novel with sappy lovesick heroes, she is terrified of things that go bump in the night. This makes for quite a complicated relationship with zombies, something that she just can’t get enough of.
