INTERVIEW: Natsuya Uesugi and #Giveaway!

Today we are talking to the marvelous Natsuya Uesugi who gets bonus points for the Saiyuki poster in the background of his totally kickass hat photo! Make sure you check out the giveaway going on at the end of the interview, too.

Hello Natsuya and welcome to The Hat Party <3 Thank you so much for subjecting yourself to the RANDOMNESS that is a Raine O'Tierney interview! Please don your best hat, and let's get started!

A giant python is standing between you and you writing. Quite. Literally. Do you fight the python? Or give up writing forever?

Of course I fight the python. Writing is a part of my soul, it is necessity. I must do it and get the grydscaen sci fi message out. The python is a pussy I will defeat it and reign supreme proliferating the message of LGBT equality, inclusion and realness out into the world.

Describe yourself using song lyrics.

I choose the song blashphemous rumors by depeche mode although there is a gender issue, this song was my savior in college, I worshipped this song

Girl of 16
Whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists
Bored with life
Didn't succeed
Thank the lord
For small mercies

How is writing teenage MCs different than writing adult MCs?

Teenage MCs are driven by emotions. In grydscaen there is a 16 year old character Blue who is in love with a 26 year old hacker and prostitue named Faid. Blue is a clandestine psychic operative of the government who was indoctrinated young but his emotions rule him. These emotions are wild because he is 16 and can get obsessed easily. Writing young MCs you are able to experience the full swing of emotions that an older character might keep in check. I like writing YA because I get to explore emotions and human nature fully coming of age which you can't do with older characters.

I want to know your deepest, most hidden writing dream! Nothing is too big or too wild.

I would like to see a movie of grydscaen. There is a 2 minute movie that was produced but it is only a teaser. There are multiple books in the series and they could be distilled down into a movie. I am actually realizing one of my dreams now because grydscaen: beginnings is being made into a comic book. I have a wonderful artist using my script in this collaborative project. It will happen, just working through it now.

You have 200 words—Make. Me. Swoon. (PLEASE!)

Blue leaned back, bucking his commanders and staying out of the ops meeting. Faid was in the room with him. Blue licked his lips and anticipated the touch as Faid toyed with him seductively, candy for the eyes waiting patiently until he engaged him. Blue parted his legs and leaned back on the bed moving his hand down to the zipper on his shorts. He pulled it down not knowing what Faid was going to do, hoping he would engage, wishing it to happen.

Faid hesitated, he knew what Blue wanted but he was going to make him work for it. His years as a high priced host made him able to size up his johns, holding them at bay until they could not resist the temptation.

Faid approached the bed, seductively, his eyes meeting Blue's with his blue hair sparkling against the backdrop of the drab room. He leaned in subtly, taking it slow, moving his hand down and touching Blue's hand and moving it away.

Faid climbed onto the bed and straddled Blue, letting it linger, like a festering wound unable to release the pressure. He chanced a glance and then quickly leaned in meeting Blue's lips and touching their suppleness sucking the life out of him as he moved his fingers down his torso and touched Blue who arched his back waiting in anticipation for the rush. Faid put his hand down Blue's pants and went to that place, warm and full of desire as Blue arched his head back and let out a whimper unable to control the feeling.

If they were handing out awards for writing assets, in which category would you snag first place?

Creating three dimensional characters. The novel grydscaen:war was reviewed by professional reviewers and they said that the grydscaen characters were fully realized.

If you could go back in time and have a conversation with 13-year-old yourself right now, what would you say?

Never doubt yourself or your expression. Be androgenous and feel your true self. Let nothing stand in your way. You are a glorious being and though you may feel hardship, forever strive for realness and be all that you are. You will make it, believe in yourself, stand up to bullying and live your dream as your genuine self.

We’re often changed in big ways by people who don’t realize they’ve done anything for us at all—tell us a story of being changed!

When I was a sophmore in college I had a gay boyfriend. I didn't understand what that meant at the time, that I was gay. He was just a person who I was in love with. He changed my perception of myself and allowed me to be who I was without question. He introduced me to the college LGBT group and even though I did not come out then, he allowed me to live a fully realized life, fully accepted and in realness. It took a little bit longer for me to fully realize who I was inside and out but his caring and love for me gave me the courage to be myself. In the novel grydscaen: utopia, I recount my college life with my gay boyfriend Berlin, it made Lino my main character understand who he is. The novel grydscaen: utopia is science fiction but if you step back far enough it is the coming of age story of the author and his boyfriend in college as two young adults trying to understand life, relationships and being LGBT.

What is one writing MISTAKE you’ve made that you WOULDN’T change, and why?

There is a punctuation issue in grydscaen: retribution. This was the first book published in the grydscaen series and I was learning when wrote it. The punctuation is a stylistic thing and the professional reviewers said the book was well written. I had thought I might go back and fix the punctuation but the more I thought about it I decided against it. This was my vision and this was the first book in the grydscaen saga which was published that set the tone for all the rest. I fixed the punctuation for all the rest of the books, I learned, but grydscaen: retribution as the first book has a special place. I wouldn't change a thing.

And finally, for THE most important question of all: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kind of dachshunds?

The kind of dachshunds that are cats.

CHAPTER 1: Ameliano “Lino” Dejarre

It was early evening. Lino was ten. He was standing in front of his mother, Julianna. She was wearing a black satin evening gown with a plunging neckline, black pearls around her neck and black long gloves. She was leaning down and fixing the cuffs on Lino’s pants. He was wearing a suit with a black jacket, a black tie and a white shirt. Riuho was seated on the bench in the hallway of the palace swinging his feet back and forth, he had on a suit jacket, white shirt and black shorts. He put his fingers in his mouth and started sucking on them.
“Stop that Riuho,” said Julianna, his mother. Riuho took his hands out of his mouth and continued swinging his feet. He was nine, one year younger than Lino.

Lino’s mother stood up as the nanny approached them. The nanny was wearing a maid uniform in black and white with a lace hat on her head. She had a white apron tied around her waist. She took Riuho’s hand and he stood up and then she came over to Lino.

“Time to go,” said Lino’s mother and pushed him towards the nanny. The nanny took his hand and walked with Lino and Riuho into the Phoenix Ballroom.

The guests were milling about the hall. There was wait staff passing out drinks. This was the state dinner for the Prime Minister. Julianna went over to Lino’s father, Charles Dejarre, the Viceroy. He was wearing an elaborate outfit with epaulets in a military style. His outfit was a long coat with tails, a vest, a white shirt with lace cuffs, ruffles around the neck and red and gold embellishments. He was an opposing man, very tall with brown hair and dark eyes. He put out his arm to Julianna and waited at the back of the Phoenix Ballroom. The imperial anthem began to play and the Viceroy walked with Julianna up the center of the room to the throne. He released her arm and she sat down in the smaller of the two thrones and posed herself in the chair. Charles sat down next to her. The crowd clapped. Charles put his hand out to the side and Justine, the Viceroy’s Trance Channeler appeared from the side of the platform and came to stand to Charles’ left. Justine was wearing a white Trance Channeler jumpsuit with straps, a long white cape with an elaborate collar and a white headdress. The ends of her fingers were covered with long pointed silver rings. She bowed to the Viceroy and took up her place. Charles raised his arm and the Prime Minister came out from the other side of the stage and stood in front of the Viceroy. Charles began to speak as the music died down.

“Today we honor the Prime Minister, Alistair Junesse for his work on the political treaty with the Inlan Islands. Please show him your respect. And enjoy yourselves this night.”

Music began to play again as the Prime Minister turned toward the audience and the Viceroy and his wife, Julianna got up and came down from the platform to mingle with the crowd. Julianna went over to the nanny and started speaking with her.

Riuho was restless, he stuck out his foot and pulled away from the nanny who was holding his hand. Lino just stood by the nanny without causing any problems.

“Go play with your brother in the garden,” said Julianna to Lino. The nanny released Riuho’s hand and Lino came over and pushed Riuho out to the left of the Phoenix Ballroom past Justine and around the corner.

The nanny stayed in the hall talking to Julianna for a while, and then went to the pantry to prepare some food for Lino and Riuho. Julianna went back to her husband and mingled with the crowd. Julianna engaged the Prime Minister’s wife. The Viceroy left her and went to talk to some ministers from the United Municipalities.

The garden was off the back of the Phoenix Ballroom and wrapped around the ballroom and extended outside the assembly hall. There was an external hallway that led to the meeting rooms but the garden was off to the right. Lino pushed open the elaborate glass door with gold piping and embellishments and opened it onto the picture garden. There were cut bushes and flower beds and a wire bench in the center of a circular cut out of plants. There were also large alabaster statues of angels and of the gods and goddesses from the Parable of Thoth along with circular pathways that surrounded the central area. Along the outside of the garden was the ministers hall and an external corridor with large white marble pillars.

Riuho ran through the door and out into the garden and sat down on a bench of which there were many spaced throughout. Lino came over to him. You could see the glass windows of the Phoenix Ballroom.
“Lets play gift of the goddess,” said Riuho swinging his feet back and forth.

Lino frowned, “We shouldn’t, Dr. Ren told us not to do that with people.”

“No I want to play,” said Riuho and lifted his hand and put his palm up and closed his eyes. A light formed around his hand, the aegis or manifestation of his psychic power, and then his palm started to glow and a light danced around his fingers.
